Speech: Excerpted from Barack Obama's campaign speech, New Hampshire, January 2008

“Obama 'Still Fired Up' After Tough Loss in N.H. Primary,” The Washington Post

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/08/AR2008010804032.html

This week we will be listening to a music video to review all the pronunciation items that we learned over our entire course.  The song lyrics are provided, but first, I would like for you to listen to the song twice.  Then you can read the lyrics and hear the song again.  We will also discuss the meaning of the song, so come to class prepared to share your ideas!

THINK about:

The presentation, images
  • Why is it in black and white?
  • What is the tone of the music?

WRITE about:

The theme is 'change'.
  • What kind of change was Obama talking about?

  • What would the change include?

Listening exercise:

The words to the video are attached but try to push yourself:
1) Listen without the words.
2) Read the words, look up those you don't know.
3) Listen and read.

Repeat this exercise as many times as you need to feel comfortable with the difficult sections.

Expression used in the video:

1. Blaze a trail= start a new path in the forest of life where there has not been any way through (metaphorical)

2. Struck out (strike out)= not succeeded, unsuccessful

3. Unforgiving wilderness= harsh conditions that cause harm and misery

4. Workers who organized= refers to unions, a group of people who work together form an organization to safeguard worker's rights

5. Women who reached for the ballots= refers to the right to vote for women in the US which happened after women organized to demand their voting rights

6. President who chose the moon as our new frontier= refers to President Kennedy's focus on the space mission to the moon

7. a King who took us to the mountaintop= refers to activist, Dr. Martin Luther King, who gave a sermon about bringing together different races and his desire to let freedom ring, "from the mountain top in Georgia."

8. the Promised Land= biblical reference but here refers to what was promised in our Declaration of Independence that "all men are created equal"

9. unlikely story that is America= refers to our history as a nation and the formation of a democracy that is unique from other countries around the world

10. little girl who goes to a crumbling school in Dillon= reference of a school that is broken down in disrepair, crumbling means falling apart

11. boy who learns on the streets of LA= here "learning" refers to street smarts, not book smarts, street smarts help you survive in the city life

12. divided as our politics suggests= refers to the battle between the republican and democratic political parties

13. words that ring from coast to coast= this could refer to our nation as a whole with the Atlantic coast to the east and the Pacific coast to the west

14. from sea to shining sea= these are lyrics from our national anthem, "America The Beautiful"

Dear Students,
This lesson was developed by another teacher that I met during an online course. She gave me permission to use it with you. I hope you like listening to her voice instead of mine. It will be good practice.
