Course Glossary: Comprehensive Vocabulary List Weeks 1-8
Week 1
Dear Students,
I have started to collect the words that we are learning in class. Your classmate, Abdullah, has given examples of sentences with each word. Listen several times to Mrs. Rogers reading the list of words. Practice repeating the words. Study the definitions. LISTEN
1. Browser = web surfing software, for example, Internet Explorer, Moxilla's Firefox, Netscape, Safari
Example: I like to use the browser, Mozilla Firefox, for web surfing; however, I have to use Internet Explorer for work.
2. Browsing= a) searching on-line, b) searching in a store for something to buy
Example: I was online last night browsing for news about the oil spill issue in the gulf.
3. Search engine = Internet programs like Google, Yahoo, or Bing that help you locate what you are looking for on the World Wide Web (WWW).
Example: Bing is a new search engine while Google is an old one.
4. Wiki = a personal learning environment on-line that you can use for collaboration or studying.
Example: Mrs. Rogers is using the wiki to help her students learn English faster.
5. URL= a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is the address of a page on the World Wide Web.
Example: The U.R.L. of a website is its exact address on the World Wide Web.
6. Netiquette = etiquette or manners for the Internet, Net is short for Internet, therefore net+etiquette=netiquette
Example: Netiquette is a set of rules and practices that we all should follow and respect when using the internet.
7. Reduced speech= normal sounds of letters are reduced or changed into a different sound to speak informally
Example: Helping verbs such as be, have and would can be reduced to the schwa sound.
8. Schwa = the /uh/ sound represented by the symbol of an upside down (ə).
Example: "The word schwa comes from the Hebrew word shva." (excerpt from Wikipedia)
9. Eaves-dropping = the act of listening in on someone's conversation without letting them know.
Example: Eaves-dropping is one way to improve your listening while in public areas.
Week 2
Listen several times to Mrs. Rogers reading the list of words. Practice repeating the words. Study the definitions. LISTEN
Note: Your classmate, Abdullah, has given examples of sentences with each word.
1. Link/hot link/hyperlink= a link is slang for a hyperlink that connects you to an existing Web site address, if it is actively working, then it is called a "hot link"
Example: I check to see if all the links on the wiki are "hot."
2. Broken link (also called a "dead link") = if the link is broken, then it does not function and needs repair
Example: The main link of Facebook was dead this morning, so I could not log in to my profile.
3. Minimize and maximize = these are the verbs used to enlarge (maximize) or reduce (minimize) the browser you are working in on the computer
Example: Minimizing something is making it smaller while maximizing something is making it bigger or larger.
4. Voiced and unvoiced sounds = some letters are produced with your vocal cords (voiced) and others are produced without the use of the vocal chords (unvoiced), such as with a stream of air
Example: Voiced letters require the vocal cords to vibrate while unvoiced letters are produced with a stream of air.
5. Bookmark = can be used as a noun and a verb, a) the noun is an object that holds or marks your page in a book, b) the verb is the action of keeping the place or Web page "marked" on your Internet browser, so that you can return to that same place again when you go on the Internet on that computer.
Example: To launch a website faster, you can bookmark it as a favorite on your browser.
6. Favorites=these are the Websites that you saved by bookmarking as your favorite places to go on the Internet, doing so saves time and keeps you from having to retype the URL/Web addresses each time you intend to visit them on-line.
Example: Brazil is my favorite team in the World Cup, so I hope they win every match.
7. Figurative language vs. literal language = figurative speech refers to language that takes on a physical aspect or shape that's not real, literal language deals with reality.
Example: Figurative language is creative and interesting while literal language is clear and real.
Week 3
Directions: Study the word, definition, and sentence. Listen to Mrs. Rogers pronounce the vocabulary.
Note: Mrs. Rogers created these sentence.
- Vocal chords= a part of the body that produces sound for your voice
Example: Use your vocal chords to make a voiced sound like the letter /d/.
- Stream of air= 1) can be voiceless letters that are produced with your lungs, 2) can be a gust of air outside, weather
Example: Use a stream of air to pronounce a voiceless letter like /p/.
- Font size= the measurement of the letters, for example, size 14pt.
Example: Change the font size to 14 when writing on this wiki.
- Edit content= correcting the words or the font size or adding new content
Example: As a writer, you can edit content on this wiki.
- House-keeping items= slang term for taking care of the little tasks, in the teacher's case, everything but teaching
Example: The teacher goes over the house-keeping items like turning on the computers, cleaning the board, and taking roll before she starts teaching.
- Guest speaker = someone who gives a talk or conversation as visitor the class, or workplace, or country
Example: We have listened to many visitors or guest speakers in our class.
- Phonics= sounds of a language, linguistics is the study of phonics, for example we are studying /t/, /d/, and /Id/
Example: To learn a language, you need to learn the sounds that each letter makes, this is called phonics.
- Enlarge vs. Reduce =maximize and minimize, make larger or smaller
Example: To enlarge the text on the computer screen, click on Control and + (plus), and to reduce the text on the screen, click on Control and - (minus)
- writer privileges (permission) = on the wiki you can write content and edit
Example: Mrs. Rogers gave you permission to edit content, that means that you have writer privileges.
- Glossary = Vocabulary list
Example: The glossary is a list of vocabulary with definitions to reference for understanding.
Week 4
Listen several times to Mrs. Rogers reading the list of words. Practice repeating the words. Study the definitions.
Note: Hadi created these sentence for us with input from Mrs. Rogers.
- Data = information
Example: I can use data from the Internet to learn.
- Database= Web site with a large collection of data
Example: The USA has a large database with all of the students' information.
- Download= to copy information from the Web
Example: I always download music to a file.
- Email= electronic mail
Example: Mail that goes electronically from your computer to someone else's computer is called email.
- Email address= sandrogers123@yahoo.com
Example: Mrs. Rogers email address is sandrogers123@yahoo.com.
- Email program= software you use to send email such as Yahoo! or Hotmail.
Example: I use to Yahoo's email program .

- Homepage= the front page of the Web site
Example: My homepage is Google search.

- the Internet= World Wide Web (WWW)
Example: The Internet , also know as the World Wide Web, was created by the US government.
- Internet portal= a Web site that allows you to search the Web such as Google
Example: Google is an Internet portal.
- keyword= important words for your search
Example: A word used to enter in a Google search to find more information is called a keyword.
- Link/hot link/hyperlink= a link is slang for a hyperlink that connects you to an existing Web site address, if it is actively working, then it is called a "hot link"
Example: I check all the links on the wiki and they work.
- Login= process of identifying yourself
Example: I login to Mrs. Rogers' wiki.
- Online= connected to the Internet
Example: My status on Skype shows that I'm online.
- Password= a secret word to enter a computer system
Example: You need a password to enter an online program.
- Surfing the Web= exploring the Internet
Example: When you look for information on the Internet, this is called "surfing the Web."
- URL= a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is the address of a page on the World Wide Web
Example: The URL for this wiki is http://teacherrogers.pbworks.com.
- Username= a name you use to enter a computer system
Example: Your username for a Yahoo account is your first part of the email, for example, mine is sandroger123.
- Web Browser = web surfing software, for example, Internet Explorer, Moxilla's Firefox, Netscape, Safari
Example: My favorite Web browser is Firefox.
- Web directory= links to Web pages
Example: The Web directory for our wiki is in the sidebar.
- Web page= an electronic page of information
Example: The Glossary Page is a Web page on our wiki.
- Web Search engine = Internet programs like Google that help you locate what you are looking for WWW
Example: I usually use Google's search engine.
- Web site= a collection of web pages
Example: A wiki is a Web site.
Week 7
Listen and practice saying this week's list of words. Ji Hye wrote these sentences for our class with Mrs. Rogers' edits.
1. Appropriate = something that is good, ok, not offensive
Example: I wear an appropriate suit for the interview.
2. Inappropriate = something that is offensive, not ok, not good
Example: My sister wore inappropriate clothing to school and they made her go home and change.
3. Spam = junk mail that goes to your Inbox of your email account
Example: I don't like spam mail.
4. Career = profession, job, work
Example: Women like to have careers in Korea and work just like men do.
5. Occasion = when something happens, for example, a happy occasion
Example: Occasionally, I go to the mall when I feel happy.
6. Upload = to place your electronic document on to a Web site or wiki.
Example: I upload photos to my facebook profile.
7. Download = to copy a document or file from the Internet
Example: I download Mrs. Rogers' vocabulary lists.
8. Audio file = recording that is saved into a file for listening
Example: Sometimes I record my voice to make an audio file.
9. Blog = a weblog that is written for online reading
Example: In my blog, you can find some useful information.
10. Survey = a questionnaire about your interests, concerns, or general information
Example: When my teacher has concerns, she gives us a survey to learn how we feel.

Note: Hanadi wrote these sentences with assistance from Mrs. Rogers.
- Creed- a pledge of a belief, usually written
Example: The priest followed the teaching of his creed.
- Founding- to start something for the first time
Example: The XYZ foundation was founded in 1983 by ABC.
- Declare- to make a statement, a declaration of independence, for example
Example: To declare a final word before your death.
- Destiny- your ultimate location, what you are supposed to do or be
Example: It is my destiny to be a teacher, this is what I was born to do.
- Abolitionists - to abolish is to stop something completely, an abolitionist is the person who wants to stop an activity
Example: Abolitionists tried to stop people from drinking in the US in the 1920s.
- Obstacles- these can be real items like a log in the road or a philosophical idea that stops people from believing or thinking about something (Also,obstacles = stand in our way)
Example: I have a lot of obstacles in my life, but in the end, I am very happy for everything.
- Chorus- to sing as a group as one voice
Example: Do you want to sing in the chorus at church?
- Cynics- a person who is negative
Example: I don't like cynics because they are depressing.
- Dissonant- to go against an established idea
Example: He is dissonant about government today and wants to go against its ideals.
- Pause- to stop something for a short time in order to think or do something else
Example: You can pause a movie should you need to answer the phone and then return to your program
- Reality check- to self-examine or to look at something with a realist's perspective
Example: Mrs. Rogers' did a reality check and realized that she needed to loose some weight.
- False hope- is not real hope but fake
Example: When I get angry, I feel all my life has been based on false hope.
- Unlikely- uncommon, rare, not like the usual thing/person/place
Example: It is unlikely that it will snow in the summer time.
- Prosperity- wealth or happiness or health or whatever makes you prosper (to do better in life)
Example: In the late 1990s, US personal savings plunged dramatically with falling prosperity.
- Justice- justice deals with the legal system or legal rights of an individual
Example: A marriage license is granted by the local justice of the peace at a courthouse.
- Equality- represents the same or equal ideals for all men and women no matter their race, wealth, age, or gender
Example: He spent his whole life fighting for racial equality.

Please do not use the Google translator or other translating devices. A good learning strategy is to look it up in an English dictionary.
